Heating Tube

The first of my recordings was a tube omitting heat from a house. I wanted to use some loud industrial noises, hoping to possibly juxtapose them with more peaceful noises in the future. On this particular sound, I placed the right mic close to the tube and the left one towards the street.

Piano Man

Due to the temperature outside while going on my first drift, I stopped by a nearby friend’s house for heat and shelter. Upon entering the house, I was greeted by a very beautiful, original piano piece being played by an acquaintance of mine. I placed my microphones on opposite sides of the piano and let him play for a while.

Water Gauge

Walking down E. Linwood Avenue, I discovered a shrieking noise coming from the side of a nearby house. I placed the left and right microphones on opposite sides of the object and got some really interesting shrieking and pulsating.

Old Female Musician

My most memorable noise throughout my first drift was one I encountered while strolling the Music Building halls of UWM. Walking down the hallway, a cacophony of noise flooded my ears; however, I soon manipulated the mic towards a room where a string section was performing. Kung-Fu Sticks

Throughout my first drift I tried to find ambient beats. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across a Kung-Fu instructor teaching U.W.M. students how to fight with a wooden stick. The clashing of the two wooden objects created a steady beat. Also, you can hear the instructor counting down the men who are sparring.

Drift Strategy

In an attempt to get out of my habitual walking patterns that take up so much time in my everyday escapades, I will Algorithmically walk around Milwaukee. An "Algorithmic Walk" is a stroll in which, I walk in a predetermined pattern despite where it may lead. This shall help me release myself from ritual and comfort; thus, I will hopefully gain an increased amount of insight to the environment around me. The specific pattern I plan to use is: a left right alternation every five blocks, this shall hopefully create I zig-zagged line. This blog is documentation of that experience.
